PaperWise fulfills exactly these requirements. PaperWise is made from stems and leaves – by-products from the production of sugar from sugar cane. Even the parts of the plant that cannot be used for either sugar or paper production are not lost: they provide energy for the generators needed to operate the paper mill. In the production of sugar from sugar cane, only a fifth of the plant can be converted into actual sugar. 80 percent of the plant is “waste”. But nature knows no garbage – just like PaperWise. PaperWise produces a high quality cardboard from the stems and leaves of the sugar cane plant, as well as from the so-called “bagasse” which remains after sugar extraction.
For technical reasons, PaperWise white (white surface) contains a small amount of wood pulp. Fresh fibers for paper and cardboard are obtained from a large number of trees in monocultures. It is clear that biodiversity, sustainability and environmental quality are falling by the wayside. In addition, valuable arable land is lost, which could be available for the production of urgently needed food.
Combined with the green manufacturing process, PaperWise reduces the environmental impact by 47% compared to FSC paper (based on wood fiber) and 29% lower than recycled paper (Source: LCA Quickscan PaperWise carried out by IVAM University of Amsterdam). Agricultural waste accumulates every year and millions of hectares of forest land are spared when this waste is used as a raw material for paper and cardboard.
PaperWise has an excellent life cycle assessment. That is why PaperWise received the coveted Climatop award in September 2015. The total environmental impact is 45 percent lower compared to commercial fresh fiber paper. PaperWise paper and cardboard is produced in factories in India and Colombia that are of great importance to the development of local communities. It invests in education and health care and the manufacturing process is focused on safety, zero waste and ecology.
